. . . and now we’ve interviewed Zach for the podcast. Get ready to be moved to tears, to be inspired, and to learn things about life, addiction, dogs, shelters and the people who work in them, prison systems, dogs and prisoners, and more.

As different as we think we are from our canine companions, it's now known that we're much more alike than previously thought, at least when it comes to our brains. We now know that dogs are sentient beings—as are all animals—and if you want to set them up for success, the more you know about their brain, the better. And remember this when it comes to you and your dog: Great Minds Think Alike!

SUMMARY

In this interview, Dr. Kathy Murphy explores the field of neuroscience as it relates to understanding how dogs think and behave and how more knowledge in this area leads to successful outcomes for pet parents. The fascinating similarities between human and dog brains are discussed, highlighting that while there are anatomical and cellular similarities, there are also differences in brain structure and development trajectories. In glossary form, there’s a captivating discussion around neurotransmitters and neuroeconomics and how these phenomena impact behavior. You’ll learn about phenotypes, genotypes, coupling, functional connectivity, and how a dog thinks and grieves. From time to time, the conversation touches on the ethical considerations of brain research in dogs.
