HOWLS FROM THE FOUNDER
FROM OUR DOG HOUSE TO YOURS
April 7, 2024
I guess I’m still a super nerd because I’m loving this two-part podcast series on brains! Dog brains, that is. This is a podcast about dogs, after all!
PRESENTING SPONSOR
We’re very honored to introduce a new Presenting Sponsor, Colorado Citizens for Canine Welfare (3CW) — an NFP committed to permanently stopping the egregious “industry” of puppy mills, so-called breeders, that are in the “business” for only one reason: to make money. The remarkably passionate team at 3CW devotes its time and resources to 1. Public education; 2. Guidance in finding a new dog from a humane source; 3. Animal welfare advocacy. We salute them. We support them. And we thank them for their support!
EPISODE 9
In E:9, Part 2 of our series on the brains of dogs, Drew and I take the deep dive into brain development with neuroscientist Kathy Murphy. She explains how dogs’ brains develop throughout their entire lifespan, starting in puppyhood. It’s a big deal because if you understand some of the basics and get things right in puppyhood, you’re much more likely to set the dog up for success.. That means not only a happier dog, but also gleaning more joy from your companionship. We talk a lot about the adolescent years . . . just think teenager, and you’ll get the picture. We ask Kathy about neutering and spaying and how they can impact the brain. Kathy enlightens us on puppy socialization, tolerance, and resilience. We also ask about how dogs dream, and it turns out there’s more to it than you might have thought. As well, we discuss disrupted sleep cycles and how they can impact “coupling” (remember that from Part 1?). And lastly, play! It’s all about play. We even talk about rat tickling. Yikes!
If you ask me, this talk about brains is fascinating, and as I said when we released Part 1, I can’t imagine a better person to engage for this conversation than Dr. Murphy. It’s not necessarily an easy topic. But the more you know, the better the outcome will be. It never fails!
