HOWLS FROM THE FOUNDER
How To Feed Your Dog For Longevity
May 2, 2024
From the beginning, one of the ideas for Love, Dog was to find people in the canine nutrition space who’d be willing to “put it all out there” and tell us the best way to feed our dogs. There’s more than one version — there’s more than two, three, or four — approach or philosophy about dog nutrition. And I think that’s the point: Because there are so many ideas and approaches, a lot of us are confused, especially first-time pet parents with a new pup. Depending on who you are and what your values are (not to mention your budget and whatever free time you have) some of what you hear can easily be discarded. But other options are not necessarily objectionable, it’s just that you may not know enough to make an informed choice.
Enter Gary Richter, M.S., D.V.M. who was voted America’s favorite vet one year and best vet in another. He’s written two books, The Ultimate Pet Health Guide and Longevity For Dogs. He’s also the Founder of Ultimate Pet Nutrition. For about the past decade, I’ve been learning from him on YouTube, and I met-up with him back in March. Long story short, he and his book publisher agreed to let Love, Dog publish Chapter 3, NUTRITION, from Longevity For Dogs (1st Edition August 2023) as the lead article for our latest Big Dog Story. And yeah, it’s BIG!!
It contains everything you need to know from what a dog’s essential nutritional needs are regarding protein, carbohydrates, fat, water, and vitamins & minerals. It contains understandable charts to figure out where your dog is today and suggestions for feeding your dog going forward. Dr. Richter’s approach and suggestions are logical, reasonable, and doable. Ultimately, he guides you to using the foods and feeding approach that will work best for you in the context of what he believes will lead to a longer, healthier, happier life for your dog.

We also have a big discussion about food, nutrition, exercise, and stress. We had a great conversation with Randy. We covered A LOT of territory. You’ll love it!
