HOWLS FROM THE FOUNDER
How Much is That Doggie in the Window?
June 2, 2024
First, a quote from our new podcast episode
In the state of Colorado: “93% — that’s a huge number! — 93% of the puppies that come in from out-of-state and are sold through the pet stores come from puppy mills or puppy mill brokers. 93%!! So that tells you that if you’re going into a pet store, you are almost certainly getting a puppy from a mill.”
Pam Dickerson, President, Colorado Citizens for Canine Welfare

PUPPY MILLS ARE BAD!
Indeed they are! In our latest podcast episode, we interview Pam Dickerson, President, and Cheryl Saipe, Treasurer, of Colorado Citizens for Canine Welfare. We take the deep dive into an important—and somewhat unpleasant— topic that the public urgently needs to know more about. Puppy mills disguise themselves as proper breeders. THEY ARE NOT! Puppy Mill owners lie to you and tell you their dogs are bred for health. THEY ARE NOT! Puppy Mill owners won’t tell you that the conditions in their mills are filthy, dangerous, confining, and inhumane as they stack their dogs (the mothers) one on top of the other in small cages—in captivity—breeding them in every cycle. THEY ARE AND THEY DO!
Yet that doggie in the window catches your eye. You’re mesmerized! You go in, when you’d be much better off if you’d just walk on by. Do you hear two songs there? If you walk-in, you’ll pay a premium for that pup, and then one way or another, you’ll pay the price, either with behavior issues—because the dog was pulled away from the pack too soon and hasn’t been socialized properly, not-to-mention, has traveled from one cage to another to get to that store—or with health issues, or both. In the podcast show notes, you’ll find links to all the resources you could ever need to avoid buying a dog from a mill. The bottom line is this: We don’t want to support puppy mills. We want them to go away. Importantly, we discuss adoption. Often, dogs in shelters do come from mills. There is a difference, though.
